Join Faye (Wildest Yoga) from Saturday 12th - Saturday 19th January 2019, for a 7 day Yoga + Surf retreat. Taking place in Mirissa, Sri Lanka, Wildest Living will be dedicating a magical week to a reawakening of the soul, activating the new year with vinyasa and yin classes, as well as learning how to ride the waves with beginners' surf lessons.

After adventuring to Sri Lanka a few times, we fell in love with the lush green island with its misty mountain tea plantations and tropical coastlines. After stumbling upon a beautiful villa run by a local couple and their 4 year old boss, we have returned time and time again. A gem nestled between a fishing harbour and the main vibrant beach, we will be staying in beautiful private rooms, with exclusive use of the grounds, kitchens and rooftop.

With morning sweaty vinyasa yoga and sunset yin/slow flow on the roof (usually accompanied with peacocks!), incredible local vegetarian food and classes to get you surfing your first waves, this retreat will kickstart your year and help unplug from your busy life. Let us refresh your mind, body and soul.

On this retreat, Wildest Living will teach playful vinyasa yoga, slow flow and nourishing yin.

Each day will open with herbal tea from the kitchen which you can sip on the balconies, or join me for an (optional) early morning meditation facing the sunrise on the rooftop. Following this will be our signature style creative and dynamic vinyasa class in the garden. A hot and sweaty 90 minutes with lots of chances to explore challenging poses and get you ready for the rest of the day. To wind down, in the early evening we will meet on the roof and practice rejuvenating yin or gentle flow whilst watching the pink sun set over the horizon.

As always, we will also be finding new ways to explore pranayama (breath work) and meditation techniques, experimenting with different styles throughout the week.  

Helping you to deepen your understanding of your practice, we will also have a few workshops ranging from arm balances, inversions & partner yoga, the details and times will be confirmed on the schedule.

Breakfast

Our hosts will be creating a mixture of local and healthy dishes in their outdoor kitchen, including porridge with a choice of toppings such as seeds, coconuts, local treacles & cinnamon, Sri Lankan breakfast items such as egg hoppers or spicy omelettes, and of course tropical fruit platters. Coffee will also be served for those who like a hit of caffeine and fresh fruit juices/king coconuts will be served when available.

Dinner

For dinner, we will be offering the local 'Rice & Curry', Sri Lanka's national platter of traditional vegetarian coconut curries served with rice. Expect spicy bean curry, sweet pumpkin curry, local jackfruit curry (you won't believe it's not fresh fish!) and lots of dahl. Everything will be made fresh with ingredients coming from the local fresh market. Dishes will be light and healthy but will satisfy a yogi's post-class hunger. 

Local restaurants

To have the opportunity to sample the local food and area, guests can enjoy lunch at one of the the many beach-town restaurants at their own leisure. We will also have a mid-week dinner out as well as the final farewell dinner.

We will also be visiting the cool Ceylon Sliders for brunch after our surf lesson for some of the best food on the South Coast!

ROOM OPTIONS (pictures below)

Nestled between the main beach and a fishing harbour, the accommodation is a family run two-storey villa with 8 bedrooms. The house is set back from the small road and is surrounded with a luscious tropical garden full of banana trees, flowers & plants tumbling from the balconies. With access to a rooftop, you can watch the sun rise on one side, and the bats fly overhead as the sun sets on the other.

Our accommodation consists of air-conditioned bedrooms each with an en-suite Western bathroom. Beautifully decorated & minimalist, each room has a double bed - apart from one room which has 2 double beds for a sharing option - with relaxed seating areas outside each room. On a first come first serve basis, you have the choice of 2 ground floor rooms that open up into the main garden, and 5 first floor rooms with looking down onto the garden. 

We also have one indoor but open air area to chill out in, which will double up as our yoga space if it rains, and also for any evening workshops. In the garden is a detached hut housing the dining area and kitchen where we will eat breakfast and dinners. 

 

The house is a 7 minute walk from the main beach, and a 2 minute walk from the busier road. The location is quiet so you will be sure to have a peaceful sleep. 

7 Private Double Rooms 9.000 DKK

All rooms tastefully decorated with a blend of Sri Lankan and Western influences. Large double bed, en-suite bathrooms with western toilets and walk in shower. Towels provided, air-con as well as a fan, seating area outside each room. Rooms can be for 1 single person or 2 people sharing a double bed (6.000 pp).

Same as the rooms above but with 2 beds for 2 friends to share/people who don't mind shared.

AREA

MIRISSA

Located in the Southern Province 150km from the capital of Colombo, Mirissa is a laid back, coconut sipping slice of heaven. A vibrant beach dotted with guesthouses and restaurants, it is a popular destination with travellers stopping by on their circuit of Sri Lanka. In the day you will find yourself in a sun lounger all day sipping juices, watching people meander by with their surfboards looking for the perfect wave. You could also grab a tuk-tuk to explore the other beaches close by such as Weligama and Secret Beach, or take up one of the included Ayurvedic treatments and let yourself be pampered amongst the tropical gardens of the spa.

SURF

Included in the price will be x1 beginners/refresher class on the neighbouring beach of Weligama, as well as board rentals for a second day (a third day rental can also be arranged if you have the energy!)

WORKSHOPS

Closer to the time we will release a more detailed schedule but expect some exciting workshops on inversions & arm balances, pranayama, and meditation.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

Included in the price of the retreat is a 2 hour Shirodhara & full body massage at a beautiful Ayurvedic spa, set back from the beach in a peaceful garden setting with nothing to disturb but the sounds of birds and smell of smokey incense.

COOKING CLASS
The owner of the house will also be hosting a traditional vegetarian cooking class ran by her mother-in-law. We will learn how to cook several curries to eat together, and perhaps learn a few Sri Lankan cooking tricks and secrets!

Teacher

FAYE BALDWIN // WILDEST YOGA

Faye, who teaches under the name Wildest Yoga, is currently based in Copenhagen teaching in a handful of studios. She energises students through rejuvenating, sweaty, fiery Vinyasa flow classes. Balancing this, Faye also holds delicious Yoga Sound Bath workshops, bringing the yin to her usual yang yoga style by blending slow classes with deep vibrational soundscapes.

Expect laughs & bliss in her light-hearted yoga classes, where she will help you to find the internal and external balance of sweetness and intensity, to let go and create more space in the body and mind. 

Half Singaporean, a large portion of her time each year is spent traveling around Asia , exploring new places on small budgets and diving in to the local cultures.

WILDLIFE

All rooms are sealed off to the great outdoors but you will still encounter peacocks, tropical insects, monkeys, village dogs, birds and small lizards.

WEATHER

The temperature averages around 30'c at this time of year. Midday heat can be very hot inland but the beach has a strong breeze to cool you off. It is dry season so not much/no rain is expected. Evenings cool down. Every room has a fan and air-con.

TRAVEL

Nearest airport: Bandaranaike International Airport aka Colombo Airport.

Airport Transfer: 3.5 hrs car, these can be arranged as soon as place has been booked to share cost with other guests arriving at similar times. For the more adventurous there is a multi train adventure to arrive in Mirissa! Contact us for info.

RECOMMENDED

We recommend to pack the following: sunscreen, aftersun/moisturiser, mosquito repellent, scarf/shawl/long sleeved top/long trousers for cooler hour meditation & protection from mosquitos.
